New York Triples Film Tax Incentives

Image Film and television producers who shoot in New York got a huge boost Wednesday when state lawmakers approved a budget measure that tripled the tax credits on below-the-line production costs, from 10 percent to 30 percent. Combined with a 5 percent tax credit from New York City, producers will get a 35 percent rebate on many expenses when filming in and around the five boroughs.

Below-the-line costs refer to expenses that do not involve salaries for actors, writers, directors, and producers.
Tax credits were approved by the state in 2004, by the city in 2005, and totaled 15 percent. The city in particular saw a huge increase in production in winter 2007 when a record 10 television pilots were shot in Gotham. However, with other states in the region, particularly Connecticut, offering competitive tax credits, many in the entertainment industry believed New York's fledgling production renaissance was being curtailed before it could bloom fully.
